A Minnesota native with an irreverent yet polished flow, Yung Gravy broke through virally in the late 2010s by fusing trap production with unexpected samples drawn from doo-wop and 1950s pop. Tracks such as “Mr. Clean” and “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot” placed him squarely in the mainstream conversation and secured a contract with Republic Records. His 2019 album Sensational and 2020 follow-up Gasanova each reached positions just outside the Billboard 200’s Top 50. Additional 2020 and 2022 projects found him linking with bbno$ for Baby Gravy II and with Dillon Francis for the Cake and Cognac EP. The Rick Astley–interpolating “Betty (Get Money),” taken from his fourth studio album Marvelous, became his first Hot 100 entry in 2022, while a third joint effort with bbno$, Baby Gravy III, surfaced the following year. In 2024 he ventured into country music with the hybrid release Serving Country.

Born Matt Hauri in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1996, he first tried his hand at rapping during college in Madison, Wisconsin, performing casually at parties under the influence of both classic and contemporary MCs. After leaving his job in 2016 he devoted several months to home recording; the upload of his debut track “Karen” quickly generated online attention. Later that year he issued the Mr. Clean EP. The combination of doo-wop loops and trap drums on the title song prompted numerous fan-made videos, several of which spread rapidly online. Yung Gravy posted his own clip for the track in October 2017, and it too amassed millions of views within months. That same year he delivered three additional EPs: Thanksgiving’s Eve, Yung Gravity, and Baby Gravy.

He opened 2018 with the single “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot,” again built on vintage samples and his trademark lyricism. Early headline dates sold out, expanding his audience. Following his Republic signing he released the Snow Cougar EP as his major-label introduction, then closed the year with the Lil Baby collaboration “Alley Oop.” Sensational, led by “Magic,” arrived in May 2019; it landed just outside the Billboard 200’s upper half and was supported by a tour that included bbno$. While on the road the pair recorded Baby Gravy II, which appeared on Valentine’s Day 2020 with production from Y2K and guest spots by Spark Master Tape, Cuco, and TrippyThaKid.

Gasanova, Yung Gravy’s third full-length, followed in October 2020 and featured Ski Mask the Slump God, TrippyThaKid, Bobby Raps, Young Dolph, and others; it duplicated its predecessor’s Billboard 200 placement. Throughout 2021 he focused on smaller projects, including the two-part Gravy Train Down Memory Lane EP and the TrippyThaKid-assisted single “Steppin’ on the Beat.” The 2022 Cake and Cognac EP with Dillon Francis contained the T-Pain-assisted streaming success “Hot Tub.” Later that year “Betty (Get Money)” reached number 30 on the Hot 100, clearing the path for Marvelous, which showcased appearances from bbno$, IshDARR, and Rich Brian. In August 2023 Baby Gravy III arrived, preceded by the singles “Goodness Gracious” and “You Need Jesus.”

Serving Country, a country-pop-rap fusion issued in 2024, enlisted Zac Brown, Brantley Gilbert, Juicy J, and Shania Twain.
