Biography
American singer and rapper Ghostemane fuses his affinity for metal with hip-hop, mining the bleakest corners of each to shape a sinister fusion of horror-laced sounds rooted in black metal, industrial textures, and Southern rap. Emerging during the mid-2010s, he delivered more than a dozen stylistically diverse projects in roughly five years, beginning with the narcotic-tinged 2015 debut Oogabooga and reaching the industrial-tinged 2018 full-length N/O/I/S/E.
Born Eric Whitney in West Palm Beach, Florida, he first performed guitar and drums in hardcore punk and metal groups influenced by the Vandals, NOFX, and Lagwagon as well as Deicide, Carcass, and Mayhem. After completing college studies in astrophysics, he relocated to Los Angeles in 2015 and immersed himself in hip-hop shaped by OutKast and Three 6 Mafia. He soon merged these strands, capturing early narcotic-leaning works such as the eerie Oogabooga and For the Aspiring Occultist that same year. A rapid succession of 2016 releases followed, including the three albums Rituals, Blackmage, and Plagues. The last of these signaled an evolving approach as Ghostemane incorporated abrasive industrial dissonance and noise into the caustic tracks “Lady Madini” and “Euronymous,” the latter named for the late Mayhem member.
During this period he connected with $uicideboy$ and fellow Floridian Pouya, joining the latter on the viral 2017 single “1000 Rounds.” Also in 2017 he issued his sixth project, Hexada, which steered him deeper into metal territory. The corrosive N/O/I/S/E arrived in 2018 and channeled a Nine Inch Nails ethos on cuts such as “Ballgag” and “Inside,” echoing the veteran act’s Broken EP. In 2019 he pivoted sharply toward hardcore on the Fear Network EP before retreating to sparse acoustic settings on the Opium EP. Standalone singles with Health and Ho99o9 also appeared that year. After extensive 2020 negotiations for a major-label contract, Ghostemane chose to remain independent and issued his eighth album, Anti-Icon, on his own in October.
