Beginning his ascent as a lighthearted online presence rather than the brooding figure he later embodied, Scarlxrd first gained notice through comedic videos posted under the handle Mazzi Maz. Born Marius Listhrop in Wolverhampton, England in 1994, the artist abandoned that persona after years of growing visibility, briefly aligning with the band Myth City before launching the Scarlxrd project in 2015. Also performing as Yung Scar, he pivoted to aggressive delivery over warped beats and quickly built momentum with a rapid succession of releases. Early tracks such as the 2016 single “Girlfriend” leaned into shadowy trap textures, while 2017 cuts including “The Purge” and “Heart Attack” introduced harsher, metal-inflected aggression; other 2016 and 2017 offerings like “Rxse,” “Chaxsthexry,” “Cabin Fever,” and “Lxrdszn” further expanded his catalog of mixtapes and standalone singles. The platinum-certified “Heart Attack” and “Chain$aw” exemplified the visceral style that propelled his profile. His first proper studio album, Dxxm, arrived on Island Records behind the moody singles “A Braindead Civilisatixn” and “We Waste Time Faded,” followed in March 2019 by the sophomore set Infinity. Before the year closed he unveiled plans for Immxrtalizatixn, slated for early October and previewed by “Ask,” “Up.Up.Up.,” and “Backwards.” Additional Island releases included Acquired Taste Vxl 1 in 2019 and Fantasy Vxid in 2020, during which period his music appeared in the HBO series Euphoria and served as theme music for a World Wrestling Entertainment event. Scarlxrd parted ways with the label for the 2021 projects Dxxm II and the independently issued DeadRising; that same year he joined Trippie Redd on “Dead Desert” and collaborated with Florida rap/metal hybrid artist Ghostemane on the EP Lxrdmage.
