Biography
Blending post-hardcore intensity with trap immediacy, rapper/producer/songwriter Lil Lotus has emerged as a leading presence in emo rap. His output moved beyond genre limits over time, ranging from introspective acoustic pieces to expansive pop arrangements on his debut studio album Errør Bøy, issued in 2021.
Born John "Elias" Villagran in 1994, he was raised just east of downtown Dallas under strict, religious parents. Athletic yet rebellious, he cultivated an affinity for metal and connected with similar spirits at a local church, where they began creating music together. Metalcore and Christian metal dominated their focus, with the latter gaining parental approval for its themes despite the sonic weight. In 2011, at age 17, the death of his father—who had provided his initial guitar lessons—prompted the already headstrong teen to take to the road, residing in his car for two years. Upon returning, he abandoned his prior pattern of metal band collaborations and turned instead to crafting personal, confessional songs with basic equipment.
After relocating to L.A., Villagran connected with aligned artists including the GothBoiClique collective and Canadian-born producer Nedarb, whose work shaped the Bodybag EP. Its breakthrough prompted an active phase of performances, even as official Lil Lotus releases remained limited; while he frequently shared tracks on free streaming platforms, the next promoted single arrived in June 2018 with the somber "Leave Me." By November of that year he had achieved complete sobriety from drugs and alcohol, spurring a burst of output that included two joint tracks and the acoustic-focused "Over It," again produced by Nedarb.
In 2019 Lil Lotus resumed a relatively low-key existence back in Dallas, yet 2020 delivered a surge of material that marked his most visible stretch yet. Across eight months he put out three EPs, two singles, and the 2016-2018 compilation containing 45 self-recorded archival tracks. He balanced solo work with projects alongside post-hardcore outfit If I Die First and the rap group Boyfriendz, formed with Lil Aaron and Smrtdeath. Amid these efforts he released the All My Little Scars EPs in volumes 1, 2, and 3. Fresh singles followed, culminating in the August 2021 arrival of his first full-length studio album, Errør Bøy, via Epitaph. The record featured contributions from Lil Aaron, Travis Barker, and Chrissy Costanza.
