Biography
Joe Mulherin operates the enigmatic project nothing, nowhere. from his Vermont base, functioning as singer, rapper, and songwriter while fusing cathartic emo-rap, trap, and indie rock in balanced proportions. Several modest independent releases gradually raised his visibility before the 2017 album Reaper generated widespread attention as his second full-length, his first on Pete Wentz's DCD2 imprint, and a work that drew strong critical approval. The 2019 EP bloodlust resulted from a partnership with blink-182's Travis Barker. Trauma Factory, his fourth album, appeared via Fueled by Ramen in 2021 and led to further joint work with Wentz, Stand Atlantic, and Underoath, among additional collaborators. After the 2023 LP Void Eternal, Mulherin created his own imprint, Reapers Realm Records, which debuted with four nothing, nowhere. albums plus material from other artists throughout 2024.
Mulherin grew up in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and took up acoustic guitar at age 12, initially adapting emo approaches to well-known rap tracks. Multiple short-lived bands occupied his teenage and early adult years until he shifted focus to solo work. Retaining rap elements alongside guitar-driven arrangements and drawing inspiration from songwriters such as Sufjan Stevens, Owen, and (Sandy) Alex G, he adopted the nothing, nowhere. name in April 2015. Early promotion concealed his identity through obscured faces in images and hooded stage appearances. The nothing, nowhere. lp arrived in June 2015, followed later that year by the EP Bummer. Some tracks on the latter involved producers contacted through online music platforms and were tracked in his parents' Vermont basement around the period he chose to pursue music professionally. The EP Who Are You? came out on Synergy Records in early 2016, and Reaper reached DCD2 and Equal Vision Records in 2017, featuring Dashboard Confessional and Lil West while expanding his reach.
nothing, nowhere. issued his third album, Ruiner, in 2018 after signing with Fueled by Ramen. He followed with bloodlust in 2019, the Travis Barker collaboration that also included blackbear. The single "Nightmare" preceded an extensive world tour in early 2020. As a longtime vegan, straight edge adherent, and conservationist, Mulherin promoted green touring practices during those dates and aligned with local environmental groups. DCD2 and Fueled by Ramen released One Takes, Vol. 1 that July, gathering stripped-down renditions he had posted online, among them a second take on "Nightmare" and a version of American Football's "Never Meant." The new track "Lights (4444)" surfaced later that month, and multiple previews from Trauma Factory circulated by year's end. The album itself arrived in February 2021, with Trauma Factory Live issued in September. Further notable partnerships included "deathwish" with Stand Atlantic in April 2021 and "CYAN1DE" featuring Wentz in November 2022. The latter track appeared on Void Eternal, nothing, nowhere.'s final Fueled by Ramen release, which came out in March 2023 alongside the single "VEN0M" with Underoath. The self-released cassette The Void Eternal Tape followed six months afterward. In October, nothing, nowhere. appeared on Magnolia Park's Halloween mixtape track "Breathing."
Mulherin launched Reapers Realm Records in 2024, opening with the January EP digital hell by metal act spill. and four nothing, nowhere. albums: Dark Magic in February, the country-themed Hell or Highwater in June, Miserymaker in October, and Cult Classic in December.
