Eliott, the Australian singer and songwriter recognized for her commanding voice paired with perceptive songwriting, arrived on the scene in the latter half of the 2010s through her emotionally resonant EP Bold Enough. National recognition followed a year afterward via the release of “Shaking My Hips,” after which she extended her audience into broader international markets with the autobiographical “Circles.”

Born Charlotte Gemmill in Cobram, Victoria, she began singing during childhood, fueled by her mother’s support and an early admiration for Missy Higgins. On lengthy car journeys the young Gemmill would harmonize to records by the same artist, sharpening her vocal technique in the process. In her teenage years she took up guitar and started performing at local pubs. While attending the Australian Institute of Music she chose to withdraw in order to devote herself entirely to music. She adopted the mononym Eliott—an anagram of her nickname Lottie—and based herself in Melbourne.

Her debut single “Figure It Out” appeared in 2017, a spare piano-driven piece that demonstrated her gift for storytelling and for rendering everyday scenes. Further tracks followed, all gathered on her first EP, Bold Enough, issued in 2018. Eliott maintained a steady output of singles, among them the mainstream breakthrough “Shaking My Hips,” and collaborated with Kite String Tangle, Montaigne, and LUCIANBLOMKAMP. Early comparisons occasionally linked her to a young Adele or Lorde, though her work also overlapped stylistically with Maggie Rogers, Birdy, and Kacey Musgraves, the latter’s country inflection surfacing on the 2020 biographical single “Circles.” As her international profile grew she released the additional track “Home.”
