Biography
Australian musician Gab Strum crafts luminous yet introspective downtempo electronic pop as Japanese Wallpaper, evident across projects including the 2019 album Glow.
Based in Melbourne, Strum launched his laptop-based production at age 15. Drawing from the Postal Service and Tycho, he developed loop-driven pieces throughout an extended family trip. Upon returning home he began posting several tracks to SoundCloud. His breakthrough arrived after he entered the 2013 single “Breathe In,” featuring Wafia, in Unearthed High, Triple J’s contest for rising Australian artists. To his astonishment the track claimed the 2014 prize and was later selected by Zach Braff for the soundtrack of Wish I Was Here.
In 2015 Strum issued his first EP, Japanese Wallpaper, which quickly accumulated millions of streams. He followed with “Cocoon” in 2016 and “Fooling Around” in 2018, both leading toward Glow, his inaugural full-length on Nettwerk Records. Released in 2019, Glow featured Strum’s vocals throughout and introduced acoustic instrumentation to his electronic-pop framework. The single “Imaginary Friends” added backing vocals from Hatchie.
