Rapper Freddie Dredd had spent several years building an online audience when the video-platform spread of his tracks "Opaul" and "Cha Cha" triggered a sharp increase in listeners. Those widely shared cuts form only a modest slice of the Ontario-born artist's catalog, which spans full projects from Dredd in 2017 to the RCA-issued Freddie's Inferno in 2022. Frequently marked by gritty textures, hazy moods, and dark undertones with heavily distorted low frequencies, the music earns the phonk label; the productions, issued under Ryan C. as shorthand for his given name, draw from chopped-and-screwed and trap methods developed in the American South. At the same time, the recordings weave in samples spanning jazz, funk, bossa nova, pop, and video-game soundtracks, reflecting wide-ranging listening habits and close attention to hip-hop's lineage.

Born in Durham, Ontario and now based in Oshaw, Ryan Chassels began posting beats on a file-sharing site in 2014 under the name Ryan C. Other rappers soon approached him for collaborations, leading him to develop the Freddie Dredd persona that first drew notice through a tribute to television arbitrator Judge Judy. He joined the Doomshop and Sixset circles, delivering the initial commercial Freddie Dredd EPs God Is Wonderful and Snuff by late 2015. More than double that volume appeared the following year, after which Dredd arrived in 2017 as his first complete album. While work with outside producers broadened the material, the self-made singles "Opaul" in 2018 and "Cha Cha" in 2019 produced his strongest breakthrough through social-media circulation. Major-label RCA signed Chassels, who sustained his release pace with assorted singles, the Suffer EP, and Freddie's Inferno between 2020 and 2022.
