Biography
Hannah Diamond investigates themes of femininity, artifice, and authenticity via her luminous electronic pop compositions and imagery. Comparable to other PC Music associates, the substance of her high-concept method, first presented through 2013's "Pink and Blue," resides in that approach itself: her vocals receive extensive processing yet convey nearly childlike simplicity in both phrasing and words, while the accompanying synths and rhythms reference 2000s Euro-dance, happy hardcore, grime, J-pop, and K-pop without replicating any earlier sound precisely. Although PC Music's aesthetic frequently drew descriptions as divisive, she secured a Billboard-charting success via the vivid 2014 single "Every Night" and added a layer of melancholy to her music on the 2019 album Reflections. The uplifting Perfect Picture, released in 2023 as her concluding PC Music project, indicated an empowering new chapter in Diamond's artistic development.
Born Hannah Amond, Diamond first built her reputation as a visual artist and photographer prior to entering music. After completing studies in fashion communication and styling, and drawing inspiration from the vivid, hyperreal imagery of photographers including David LaChapelle and Nick Knight, she managed post-production for fashion-magazine photo shoots. Diamond encountered GFOTY (short for Girlfriend of the Year, aka Polly-Louisa Salmon) through a mutual contact in 2012, after which GFOTY connected her with producer A.G. Cook, who was then establishing the PC Music collective and label. The pair promptly began recording tracks together, and Diamond simultaneously defined the collective's polished visual identity alongside its sonic direction. Her debut single on the label, "Pink and Blue," surfaced in October 2013 and helped establish PC Music's brightly illuminated hyper-pop aesthetic.
Balancing her fashion and photography commitments led Diamond to focus primarily on singles throughout most of the 2010s. In addition to featuring on Cook's "Keri Baby" in January 2014, she issued "Attachment" that April and "Every Night" in November. "Every Night," which carried a more assertive sonic profile than her earlier material, emerged as a streaming success and ultimately peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. During 2015 Diamond performed at South by Southwest within a PC Music showcase and released November's "Hi." Her 2016 output encompassed "Paradise," a collaboration with Charli XCX featured on XCX's Vroom Vroom EP, plus the single "Make Believe," which included production from Cook and easyFun. Toward the end of 2017 she delivered the mixtape Soon I Won't See You at All. The next year she joined Tommy Cash on "Cool 3D World" from his album ¥€$.
Diamond issued "True" in November 2018; together with the Danny L. Harle collaboration "Part of Me," the track appeared on her debut full-length Reflections. Once again produced by Cook, the November 2019 album offset her characteristically buoyant material with darker selections. Reflections Remixes followed in April of the subsequent year and contained reworkings by Dylan Brady and Umru, while November 2020's Reflections Hard Drive gathered alternate takes and additional material. Diamond stayed active amid the COVID-19 global pandemic, contributing to a 100 gecs remix and to Cook's 7G and Apple in 2020, then appearing on Harle's album Harlecore and a remix of Cook's "The Darkness" in 2021. That same year she initiated work on her second album, enlisting David Gamson of Scritti Politti, a significant influence on the PC Music sound, as producer. Perfect Picture, which carried more uplifting songwriting and a warmer texture shaped by late-2000s Eurodance and Britney Spears, arrived in October 2023 and ranked among PC Music's final releases.
