Terror Jr surfaced in 2016 as an enigmatic dark electropop trio. Their opening track, “3 Strikes,” surfaced that season inside a three-minute Kylie Jenner makeup advertisement, which fueled speculation that the reality star might front the unidentified act. Both the band and Jenner later rejected the notion across social platforms. Two of the founding members proved to be longtime pop and EDM songwriter David Singer-Vine, also known as Campa of the Cataracs, and producer-electropop artist Felix Snow. The pair first crossed paths in 2014 and reconnected the next year while co-writing Atlantic Records artist Kiiara’s single “Gold.” A vocalist identified only as “Lisa” completed the lineup; early promotional images that hid the members’ faces kept questions about her identity alive. Further singles “Sugar” and “Say So” arrived during spring and summer, followed in October 2016 by the debut album Bop City on the Atlantic subsidiary EFFESS, a label Snow and Singer-Vine created as a play on the producer’s initials. In May 2017 the group released “Caramel” and “Death Wish” to preview Bop City 2: TerroRising, which appeared that July and was succeeded several months later by Bop City 3: The Girl Who Cried Purple. Snow departed before year’s end, after which vocalist Lisa Vitale joined on a permanent basis. The remaining duo delivered “Heaven Wasn’t Made for Me” in 2018; the song later appeared on their first proper album, Unfortunately, Terror Jr. Issued in 2019, the record merged buoyant pop textures with socio-political themes and included production from DallasK, the Stereotypes, and additional contributors.
