Biography
FLETCHER channels a distinctly queer perspective into moody, stylish pop songs as a singer and songwriter, shaping anthems that fuse rock textures with electronic production. Attention first arrived via the digital single “War Paint,” which spread rapidly online during summer 2015, and her initial Billboard pop-genre-chart appearance came in 2019 with “Undrunk,” taken from the EP You Ruined New York City for Me. A follow-up EP titled The S(ex) Tapes reached stores in August 2020 and climbed to number 11 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The debut full-length Girl of My Dreams entered the Billboard 200’s Top 20 in 2022, after which the sophomore set In Search of the Antidote and its accompanying live recording both surfaced in 2024.
Born Cari Elise Fletcher on March 19, 1994, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the artist discovered a passion for music early and began vocal lessons at age five. Following high-school graduation, her first major industry opportunity came in 2011 when she joined the group Lakoda Rayne for the opening season of the U.S. edition of The X Factor. She later attended the Clive Davis Institute at New York University, yet withdrew after a year and a half to relocate to Nashville and work with producer and songwriter Jamie Kenney. Once that EP was completed she returned to her studies, only for “War Paint” to accumulate millions of streams in 2015 and propel the 2016 release Finding Fletcher. Subsequent standalone tracks included “You Should Talk” in late 2017 and the #MeToo-inspired “I Believe You” the following year.
“Undrunk” arrived in January 2019, its production handled by Malay (known for work with Frank Ocean and Lorde), and the single rose into the Top 20 of both the Pop Songs and Mainstream Top 40 charts while appearing on that year’s You Ruined New York City for Me EP. Seven-track collection The S(ex) Tapes followed in August 2020, again landing at number 11 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The 2021 soundtrack contribution “She Said” featured in season two of the Hulu series Love, Victor, while additional singles that year encompassed “Girls, Girls, Girls” and the Hayley Kiyoko duet “Cherry.”
September 2022 brought the debut album Girl of My Dreams, which carried executive production from Malay alongside further production and songwriting input from Jennifer Decilveo and additional collaborators. Songs such as the title track, “Her Body Is Bible,” “Becky’s So Hot,” and “Sting” explored former relationships while affirming her identity as a queer artist raised in a small conservative community, ultimately peaking at number 15 on the Billboard 200. Later releases included “Suckerpunch” on the deluxe edition of Girl of My Dreams and the holiday single “Silent Night.” The reflective track “Eras of Us” previewed the next project in 2023; “Lead Me On” and “Doing Better” appeared in early 2024, preceding the March arrival of In Search of the Antidote, which reached number 36 on the Billboard 200, and the December concert album The Antidote: Fletcher Live.
