Blending an open enthusiasm for Y2K pop with a sharp artistic edge drawn from Lady Gaga and Charli XCX, plus a knack for meme-driven aesthetics, the St. Louis-based Slayyyter emerged in early 2019 via her track "Mine." The buoyant single spread widely online and lifted her from the SoundCloud following she had built with earlier uploads, earning broader notice that led to the September 2019 arrival of her self-titled debut mixtape. She refined her approach on the 2021 studio album Troubled Paradise before embracing retro '80s textures on the daring 2023 release Starfucker.

Raised in the St. Louis suburbs, Catherine Slater started composing and tracking material during her time at the University of Missouri. After one year she left school to devote herself fully to music and took the stage name Slayyyter. Through online connections she linked up with Los Angeles-based Ayesha Erotica, and the two began working together remotely.

In 2018 Slayyyter posted her first SoundCloud tracks, beginning with the Ayesha Erotica collaboration "BFF." Additional songs that year included "Alone" and "Hello Kitty," the latter produced by Boy Sim. Early 2019 brought "Mine," which gained rapid traction and appeared on multiple digital pop charts. She promoted it with a run of shows called The Mini Tour ahead of the September mixtape drop. June 2021 saw the release of her debut full-length Troubled Paradise, whose sleeker pop sound came from contributions by Wuki, Gupi, Zakk Cervini, and additional producers. By year's end she issued the remix EP Inferno Euphoria.

Following a pair of 2022 joint tracks, among them "Hatefuck" with Pussy Riot, Slayyyter opened the rollout for her second album Starfucker by unveiling the new-wave-flavored "Out of Time" and swiftly adding the similarly styled "Miss Belladonna."
