Biography
Gaika, a London native, produces intense and unyielding tracks that weave together grime, dancehall, R&B, and hip-hop. Processed often through Auto-Tune, his vocals blend resilience with sensitivity, just as his words convey outrage at political structures and social inequities alongside personal loss and mourning. Born Gaika Tavares in the south London district of Brixton to Jamaican and Grenadian parents, he first rose to notice via Murkage, the crew that grew out of a Manchester club night sharing its name. The collective mixed grime with the gloomier edges of house and garage, issuing mixtapes from 2009 onward and drawing praise in outlets such as Mixmag. Gaika wrote the bulk of the material on Murkage’s 2013 EP SFSG as well as their 2014 debut full-length Of Mystics & Misfits. Once the group’s weekly club night wrapped its eight-year run in 2015, Gaika pivoted to solo work. His debut mixtape Machine surfaced near year’s end, and he surfaced on Kahn’s remix of Kelela’s “All the Way Down” together with Eric Volta’s “Until I Dissolve.” NON Worldwide placed his track “Chrome” on its inaugural compilation. In 2016 he joined Mykki Blanco on “Push More Weight” and delivered his acclaimed follow-up mixtape Security. After signing to Warp he saw the Spaghetto EP issued that year; he also appeared on labelmate Darkstar’s Made to Measure EP and on Babyfather’s 419 mixtape. The following year he remixed 18+’s “Glow,” while Warp put out The Spectacular Empire I and II, a pair of 10" singles spotlighting frequent partner Miss Red, the dancehall MC originally from Israel. He further contributed to L-Vis 1990’s 12 Thousand Nights mixtape. Gaika’s first full-length Basic Volume arrived in 2018, featuring co-production from SOPHIE, Jam City, Dutch E Germ, and others. Outside music he contributed articles to Dazed magazine, among them a critique of the Metropolitan Police’s crackdown on U.K. drill music, and he created the audiovisual sculpture installation SYSTEM in tandem with Boiler Room and Somerset House Studios. He released the 2019 mixtape Heaters 4 the 2 Seaters, which featured Dean Blunt, Rome Fortune, and Spragga Benz, before exiting Warp. His 2020 album Seguridad appeared via Mexico City’s NAAFI collective and included Debit, Tayhana, and Lechuga Zafiro. Gaika next mounted an installation at the ICA in London; its soundtrack emerged as War Island OST in 2022, drawing contributions from Felix Lee, Mun Sing, Nick León, David Sitek of TV on the Radio, and additional voices. Released by Big Dada in 2023, his album Drift leaned on live instrumentation and veered closer to post-punk and dub than his earlier material.
