Biography
Blending dancehall, reggae, Afrobeat, and pop into his distinctive style, Burna Boy ranks among Nigeria's most prominent musical figures. The 2012 single "Like to Party," produced by LeriQ, served as his breakthrough release and directly led to the arrival of his debut full-length L.I.F.E twelve months afterward. Across the ensuing five years he issued two further albums while linking with an array of acts that included J Hus and Skales alongside Fall Out Boy and Lily Allen. Wider international reach followed with the 2018 album Outside, which climbed to number three on the Billboard Reggae chart and captured the Nigeria Entertainment Award for Album of the Year. Both 2019's African Giant and 2020's Twice as Tall received broad critical acclaim and registered on charts in numerous territories. Having become the first Nigerian artist to headline Madison Square Garden, he unveiled his sixth studio effort, the hit album Love, Damini, in 2022, with the Grammy-nominated I Told Them... appearing the next year. The track "Bundle by Bundle" previewed his forthcoming 2025 release No Sign of Weakness.
Born Damini Ogulu in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, in 1991, Burna Boy started creating music at the age of ten after a schoolmate supplied him with the FruityLoops production software. Using that tool on an aging computer, he began crafting his own instrumentals. Following graduation he relocated to London for university studies, yet withdrew after two years and returned to Nigeria. In 2010 the nineteen-year-old Ogulu journeyed to the nation's southern coast, where producer LeriQ maintained studio facilities through a shared contact. During this phase he immersed himself in the sounds of his homeland, having previously absorbed American artists such as DMX throughout his youth. He also examined the dancehall and reggae favored by his father and the Afro-beat preferred by his grandfather, the latter having served as Fela Kuti's first manager. These explorations coalesced into the genre-blending approach that would define his output.
Working again with LeriQ, Burna Boy recorded "Like to Party," the release that elevated his profile and stirred local excitement. His first studio album arrived in 2013; L.I.F.E featured appearances by Wizkid, Timaya, 2face, and M.I. and earned positive notices from critics. For the follow-up, 2015's On a Spaceship, Burna ended his associations with both his prior label and LeriQ while delivering a set even more varied than its predecessor. In 2017 he partnered with producer Juls on the single "Rock Your Body." Additional tracks issued that year encompassed "GBA," "Streets of Africa," "Koni Baje," and "Sekkle Down" featuring J Hus. After dropping the Lily Allen-assisted "Heaven's Gate" in early January 2018, he released his third album, Outside, later the same month.
A year afterward he returned with "Killin Dem," a collaboration with Zlatan. Along with later singles such as "Dangote" and "On the Low," the track appeared on his fourth album, African Giant, which surfaced in July 2019 and earned a nomination for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards. In August 2020 Burna issued Twice as Tall, his highest-charting project to date, which reached number 54 on the Billboard 200 while performing strongly across Europe and Canada and ultimately secured a Grammy for Best Global Music Album. Guest contributions on the record came from Youssou N'Dour, Naughty by Nature, Coldplay's Chris Martin, and others. The 2021 collaboration "Rotate" with Becky G preceded the solo single "Kilometre." In April 2022 Burna staged a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden, marking the first time a Nigerian artist headlined the historic New York venue. His sixth album, Love, Damini, arrived on July 2—his thirty-first birthday—led by the Toni Braxton-sampling single "Last Last." Another guest-laden project, it incorporated contributions from South African choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo to British star Ed Sheeran and attained strong chart positions worldwide, including number 14 on the Billboard 200.
In addition to a prominent UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show performance in Istanbul, Burna issued several 2023 singles, among them the hit "Sittin' on Top of the World." A subsequent remix featuring 21 Savage was included on his seventh studio album, I Told Them..., released that August. The project sustained his worldwide prominence, topping the U.K. charts and generating a record-setting four Grammy nominations in the United States. Following appearances on tracks by 21 Savage and Usher, Burna Boy delivered the amapiano-influenced single "Higher" in 2024, which garnered another Grammy nomination. "Bundle by Bundle" surfaced at year's end as the lead track from 2025's No Sign of Weakness.
