Deftly blending rich Afrobeats textures with an R&B edge, Nigerian vocalist Fireboy DML achieved rapid prominence upon issuing his first full-length project, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, in 2019. Early tracks such as “Jealous” and “Vibrations” established his profile ahead of the 2020 sequel Apollo, yet it was the Ed Sheeran-assisted single “Peru” and its 2022 parent album Playboy that delivered substantial worldwide visibility.

Adedamola Adefolahan, who entered the world in Abeokuta, Ogun State, first committed to music during his university period and secured a contract with Olamide’s YBNL Nation imprint primarily because of “Jealous.” The label included the song on its 2018 collective release YBNL Mafia Family before issuing a standalone version the next year. A follow-up single, the romantic “What If I Say,” paved the way for the November 2019 arrival of Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, which also spawned the streaming success “Vibrations.” The set reached the summit of the Nigerian charts, prompting Fireboy to issue Apollo less than twelve months afterward.

By then he had registered modest inroads in territories beyond Africa, notably the U.S. and U.K. markets. In July 2021 he unveiled the solo cut “Peru,” which climbed to number two on the U.K. Singles Chart. By December a reworked edition featuring British star Ed Sheeran propelled the track onto numerous international rankings and marked his most prominent success to date. Early 2022 brought the non-album collaboration “Beauty in the Madness” alongside Rexx Life Raj and Wale, after which his third album, Playboy, arrived in August. The project housed both incarnations of “Peru” together with the widely streamed title track, sustaining his international momentum and landing in the lower reaches of the Billboard 200 stateside. “Someone” appeared the following year.
