Biography
Emerging from Berlin's subterranean techno realm, Germany's Ancient Methods forged a blackened, industrial-tinged variant of the genre. Their 2007 First Method EP, characterized by its dark and grinding qualities, established an early presence.
Formed by Michael Wollenhaupt and Conrad Protzmann, the duo began shaping their distinctive industrial-techno approach during the mid-2000s. Consisting of four untitled tracks, their initial release served as the foundation for this evolving aesthetic. In the ensuing two years, additional EPs appeared via self-release under identical naming conventions, alongside a joint effort with Adam X, an early figure in industrial techno. Wollenhaupt collaborated with Karl O'Connor, known as Regis, for the 2010 Sixth Method EP under the Ugandan Methods moniker.
Although studio material remained limited, the pair gained prominence as live performers and DJs throughout European clubs, including Berlin's Tresor and Berghain plus London's Corsica Studios.
Wollenhaupt assumed sole control of Ancient Methods with 2013's Seventh Seal, which also marked the conclusion of their self-named imprint. Subsequent outputs included the 2014 Ohne Hande in partnership with Black Egg, followed by the 2015 Turn Ice Realities into Fire Dreams EP that leaned toward psychedelic elements. A series of recordings emerged in 2017 on Candela Rising, Hospital Productions, and Persephonic Sirens. The Ancient Methods label was revived in 2018 for the inaugural full-length The Jericho Records. Drawing from a decade of prior influences, this effort presented a renewed perspective on the industrial style and incorporated contributions from Regis, Orphx, Cindytalk, and Prurient, the project of Dominick Fernow.
