In the early 1990s Canadian pair Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey launched Orphx with an initial run of experimental noise and industrial cassettes. Their debut CD, Fragmentation, arrived on the American imprint Malignant Records in 1996; by the close of the decade the project had moved toward a more techno-oriented style frequently labeled “rhythmic noise.” The 10" EP Nullity surfaced on Hands Productions in 1998 and was followed the next year by the full-length Vita Mediativa. Extensive live activity soon took the duo across North America and Europe, including multiple appearances at the German industrial events Maschinenfest and Forms of Hands alongside labelmates such as Winterkälte, Ah Cama-Sotz, Mimetic and others. Further Hands Productions albums appeared, joined in 2004 by the full-length Circuitbreaking on Hymen Records. In 2008 Hands issued Teletai, a double-CD anthology of previously vinyl-only and rare material that also contained a disc of remixes by Surgeon, Fluxion, Sleeparchive and additional techno and industrial artists. Orphx joined Adam X’s Sonic Groove roster in 2009, issuing a run of techno 12"s while sharing bills with DJs including Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock; Hymen Records later assembled selections from those singles into the compilations The Sonic Groove Releases, Pt. 1 (2014) and Pt. 2 (2015). The 2016 full-length Pitch Black Mirror featured guest vocals by Marie Davidson.
