Biography
Donato Dozzy, the Rome-based DJ and producer, shapes ambient techno into lush, hypnotic forms that verge on therapeutic. His recorded work and live sets alike unfold through slowly shifting sonic layers, sparse yet finely etched rhythms, and intermittent natural elements or their electronic counterparts. Minimal techno singles first emerged from him in 2004, frequently alongside Brando Lupi and Giorgio Gigli, and these sometimes carried stronger melodic threads than what followed. Full-length albums arrived starting in 2010, delivering deeper immersion than the earlier singles had. Voices from the Lake, the partnership with Neel, drew widespread praise once its self-titled debut surfaced in 2012. Subsequent albums grew more conceptual, restricting source material to the output of one artist on Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask or to a single instrument such as the mouth harp on The Loud Silence. Singles and EPs, by contrast, often adopt heavier, rhythm-forward approaches suited to after-hours sets that stretch past sunrise.
Donato Dozzy, born Scaramuzzi, picked up DJ techniques in the early 1980s and began with dub reggae and Italo-disco. Techno and acid house captured his attention by the close of the decade, yet he devoted most of the 1990s to studies, ultimately securing a doctorate in politics from the University of Rome. A residency at Rome’s Brancaleone club began in 1999, and he joined the band Kitchen Tools in 2001. The move to Berlin in 2004 brought a Panorama Bar residency that markedly increased his visibility. Singles then appeared on Orange Groove and Elettronica Romana, and Dozzy Records was founded in 2006. Two widely celebrated performances followed at Japan’s Labyrinth festival in 2007 and 2008, the latter later podcast by mnml ssgs. That same year Dozzy and Nuel—Manuel Fogliata—started the Aquaplano label, issuing limited techno 12"s that sold out quickly and attained cult status.
Further Records issued his first solo album, K, in 2010. The next year Dozzy and Neel—Giuseppe Tillieci—introduced the Voices from the Lake project through a Labyrinth appearance and the Silent Drops EP on Prologue. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2012 and was promptly recognized as a classic, with Resident Advisor naming it album of the year. The duo sustained performances and releases while Dozzy pursued solo activity. Spectrum Spools put out Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask in 2013, containing the Italian producer’s remixes of “Vaporware” by American experimental artist Bee Mask. The label reissued two Aquaplano titles as The Aquaplano Sessions in 2014 and released Sintetizzatrice, Dozzy’s collaboration with vocalist Anna Caragnano, in 2015. Further Records also issued The Loud Silence that year, an album built around mouth harp sounds, while Voices from the Lake’s second album, Live at Maxxi, appeared on Editions Mego. Dozzy and Neel launched Spazio Disponibile in 2016, and additional singles came via Bunker New York, Claque Musique, and Eerie. Tresor released the acid techno-influenced Filo Loves the Acid in 2018. One Instrument Sessions followed in 2019 as a retro-styled set created exclusively on an EMS Synthi AKS. October 2020 brought Il Quadro di Troisi, a collaboration with fellow Italian electronic artist Eva Geist.
