Biography
Steffi serves as the primary alias for Steffie Doms, a DJ, producer, and record label proprietor linked to Berlin’s landmark Berghain nightclub and its Ostgut Ton imprint. Early recordings and club appearances, notably the 2011 debut full-length Yours & Mine, typically merged atmospheric techno and house into reflective, inviting textures built around lush synth layers and softly looping grooves. This approach later shifted toward denser, more elaborate electro-techno, showcased on the 2017 album World of the Waking State and the 2022 release The Red Hunter.
Born in 1974 in a modest Dutch village, she first encountered dance music through Belgian new beat and early Chicago house in the late ’80s. Exposure to Detroit electro and nascent IDM in the first half of the ’90s sparked her interest in DJ’ing. After relocating to Amsterdam in 1997, she launched a club night alongside fellow artist Awanto 3; the pair soon promoted events across the Netherlands and Belgium. In 2000 the two, joined by electro producer Dexter, established the Klakson label. A 2005 encounter with Andy Baumecker introduced her to Berghain, where she immediately felt connected; she settled in Berlin two years afterward and eventually secured a residency at Panorama Bar. Her first Ostgut Ton contributions appeared in 2008, followed by 12-inch releases on Underground Quality and Domeright in 2010. That same year she inaugurated her own Dolly imprint and began issuing material under the Third Side partnership with the Analogue Cops.
Ostgut Ton issued her debut album, Yours & Mine, in 2011. The mix compilation Panorama Bar 05 arrived two years later. Her second long-player, the more overtly electro-oriented Power of Anonymity, surfaced in 2014. During that period she formed the Doms & Deykers project with Martyn; their album Evidence from a Good Source came out on 3024 in 2016. She continued to release solo and collaborative work with Dexter via her own labels and Ostgut Ton. In 2017 she teamed with Shed as STFSHD, contributing a track to the electro-leaning Fabric 94 mix. Shortly afterward Ostgut Ton released her third album, World of the Waking State, accompanied by the non-album 12-inch Waking States. The double EP Work a Change, recorded with longtime partner and collaborator Virginia, followed in 2019.
Steffi and Virginia moved to Portugal in 2020. That year Dark Entries issued Family of Waves, the first EP under her Crushed Soul alias. A 2022 collaboration with fellow Dark Entries artist Sepehr produced the Klakson EP Drunk on Psychedeli(c)a. The pair also launched the Candy Mountain label, whose inaugural release was Steffi’s harder-edged fourth album, The Red Hunter.
