Belgian DJ and producer Marco Bailey demonstrated consistent adaptability across an extended professional span. Emerging initially in the mid-'90s as a trance creator, he transitioned toward unadorned techno near the decade's close, issuing stripped-down club tracks and tribal cuts on projects including 1997's Global Warning. Throughout the 2000s he explored electro, minimal, and tech-house territories via albums such as 2004's Rudeboy alongside expansive mixes including 2005's Positive Disorder, both appearing on his self-established MB Elektronics imprint. In the 2010s he oversaw the popular Elektronic Force mix podcast before introducing Materia, which functioned simultaneously as an events venture and a label; under that banner he issued multiple EPs together with full-length works like 2021's Surreal Stage.

Marco Beelen began frequenting clubs during the late '80s and promptly took up DJ duties spinning funk, rock, and hip-hop selections. Once immersed in electronic sounds he started issuing material under the name DJ Marco Bailey on the Belgian Dance Opera label from 1994 onward. Atmospheric trance cuts such as "Place to Heaven" paved the way for his 1995 debut album Planet Goa. The track "Sniff" registered as a significant club success, while efforts including 1996's Scorpia EP sustained a hard-trance trajectory, yet by the time of 1997's Global Warning Bailey—who later discontinued the DJ prefix—had already begun shifting away from that approach. The 2000 club favorite "Play It Back" surfaced on Carl Cox's Intec Records, and the exploratory album Sacrifice and Dedication came out via Primate Recordings that same year. He inaugurated the MB Elektronics label in 2002 and maintained ties to Madrid-based Pornographic Recordings, which Cristian Varela had co-founded. The 2004 album Rudeboy featured cover artwork referencing the Clash's London Calling.

Bailey sustained output through singles, international DJ appearances, and mix compilations such as 2007's Live in Ageha Tokyo. The collaborative full-length E=MB², recorded with frequent partner Tom Hades, arrived in 2008. He introduced the Elektronic Force mix podcast in 2010 and placed the Watergate EP on John Digweed's Bedrock Records that year, followed by the 2011 album Dragon Man. High Volume appeared on MB Elektronics in 2013, while the digital remix anthology 25 Years (The Reworks) followed in 2014. Bailey introduced the Materia name in 2015 to encompass his events and release activities. The mix CD Materia XL2: Pure Electronic Journey emerged in 2016, Temper arrived as a full-length in 2017, and the Materia podcast featured contributions from artists including the Advent and Yotam Avni. Additional EPs continued to surface, among them the 2019 collaboration Submit Yourself to Me with Detroit techno legend Blake Baxter. Bailey's Surreal Stage album received a digital release in 2021, and the Electro EP From My Mind appeared on Watergate Records in 2022.
