Deetron

The Swiss DJ and producer Deetron draws his primary influence from the Detroit techno movement, a connection made plain by his chosen name. Since emerging in the 1990s, his studio work has shifted from dense, rhythm-driven cuts toward richer, more melodic pieces built around warm chords and sunlit harmonies. Behind the decks he maintains a precise yet seamless approach, layering three turntables in the manner of Jeff Mills, and has delivered well-regarded mix albums for the Balance, Fabric, and DJ-Kicks series while maintaining a constant global touring schedule. Hundreds of remixes stand to his credit, spanning underground techno figures such as Legowelt and Aril Brikha as well as non-dance artists including Ennio Morricone. Three albums have appeared to date, among them the 2021 release Rotational Gravity, alongside dozens of EPs that range from late-’90s minimal techno outings to the trance-inflected 2022 EP Mind Eclipse.

Born Samuel Geiser, Deetron absorbed hip-hop and house during the early ’90s. Guided by Swiss DJ Djaimin and Detroit icon Jeff Mills, he quickly developed his mixing skills. Late in that decade he began issuing techno 12"s under the Deetron name, while also working as Karakter, Soulmate, and Procreation—the last reserved for jazz-tinged, broken-beat material. Music Man Records put out his debut mix CD, the 37-track In the Mix, in 2002, then followed it with the 2006 album Twisted, which included vocal contributions from Detroit artists DJ Bone and Paris the Black Fu.

The 2008 mix Fuse Presents Deetron preceded Balance 020 in 2011. Music Over Matter, his second full-length and one heavy on vocals, arrived in 2013 and featured appearances by Cooly G, Hercules & Love Affair, Seth Troxler, Fritz Kalkbrenner, and additional guests. Fabric 76 and the launch of his own Character label both occurred in 2014. Re-Creation, a 2017 anthology of his remixes for Jamiroquai, Tiga, Todd Terje, and others, was followed by his 2018 installment in !K7’s DJ-Kicks series. Running Back released the EPs Body Electric in 2019 and Ego Rave in 2020. Early 2021 brought a split EP with Jovonn on the reactivated Nu Groove Records. Later that year Axis, Jeff Mills’ label, issued Deetron’s third album, Rotational Gravity, in digital form. Hot Creations put out Glass in 2022, after which Running Back released the trance-tinged Mind Eclipse as his third EP for the label.
