Tale of Us, the Berlin-residing Italian pair of Carmine Conte and Matteo Milleri, first earned recognition for understated yet intensely expressive tech-house productions and reworkings together with their daring DJ performances, prior to shifting toward modern classical and ambient territories. Their 2010 arrival quickly positioned them among the underground dance circuit’s swiftest risers, with club successes arriving through items such as the 2011 track Dark Song and the 2013 rework of Mano le Tough’s “Changing Days.” In-demand bookings followed at leading clubs and festivals worldwide, accompanied by the 2013 issuance of their initial mix compilation, Renaissance: The Mix Collection. After well-received extended plays on Minus and R&S plus the launch of their Afterlife imprint, the duo unveiled their long-anticipated album-length statement, the refined ambient recording Endless, via Deutsche Grammophon in 2017.

Carmine Conte entered the world in Toronto while Matteo Milleri was born in New York, yet both relocated to Italy at an early age. Beginning from a Milan base, they established Tale of Us—drawing the name from the Supermayer song “Two of Us”—in 2008. Opting to abandon university studies in favor of music, they moved to Berlin in 2009. Confined to a small apartment, the pair generated material continuously for months, resulting in the early-2010 Barraca Music EP Upon a Time. Their first notable club success, however, came with the exuberant reworking of Thugfucker’s “Disco Gnome,” the opening release on Life and Death, which also aided the young label’s initial momentum. Attention from Seth Troxler led to the 2011 Visionquest appearance of Dark Song. Additional singles followed on Life and Death, among them joint efforts with The/Das and Vaal, while Another Earth surfaced on Richie Hawtin’s Minus label in 2013. That year also brought a number-2 placement in Resident Advisor’s yearly Top DJs poll alongside the favorably received double-CD edition of Renaissance: The Mix Collection.

Performances remained frequent, encompassing a residency at Ibiza’s DC 10 and ongoing reworkings for Caribou, Gui Boratto, and Plastikman. Original material appeared less regularly, yet 2015 delivered North Star/Silent Space on R&S and the Mind Against collaboration Astral on Life and Death. The Afterlife label, named after their residency at another Ibiza venue, Space, was founded in 2016 and issued the 2017 single “Monument” featuring Vaal. The same year saw the unexpected step of signing with the classical institution Deutsche Grammophon for the duo’s first full-length. The piano-centric ambient set Endless marked the historic label’s initial album of original material by an electronic act, soon followed by Endless Remixes and the Fabric 97 mix CD.
