Biography
Emerging from the rising Swedish electronic community that radiates outward from Stockholm, Christian Smith has followed an extended path toward recognition as one of the leading figures shaping the nuanced overlap between house and techno, a zone frequently labeled tech-house. His entry into the field occurred at fifteen after witnessing Sven Väth perform at Dorian Gray in Frankfurt. Before long he was behind the decks himself, relocating to New York in 1989 and immersing himself in the vibrant electronic dance music currents then flowing from Chicago, Detroit, and New York. He quickly established a steady presence on the American club circuit, yet at the height of his stateside success he chose to return to his native Sweden, where he integrated into the rapidly expanding local movement alongside contemporaries such as Adam Beyer and Cari Lekebusch.
Echoing Lekebusch’s approach, Smith has maintained a simultaneous dedication to both house and techno—ordinarily a risky strategy—yet has achieved prominence through productions that blend the heavier pulse of house with the more percussive, tribal qualities of techno. His debut release surfaced in 1991, after which he contributed material to such respected imprints as Yoshitoshi, Primevil, Primate, and In-Tec, frequently in partnership with John Selway. Beyond studio work and performances, Smith oversees Tronic, the respected label he founded that features artists including Joel Mull and Mistress Barbara in addition to Beyer and Lekebusch. During summer 2001 he issued the three-turntable mix-CD Tronic Treatment, drawing on his own tracks together with selections from a strong roster of fellow producers.
