Throughout the 1990s, when German trance producer Oliver Lieb essentially shaped the genre, he issued material under dozens of pseudonyms, with L.S.G. and Spicelab proving the most prominent. The Frankfurt-based artist launched his recording career in 1989 via Force Legato’s “System” and saw his profile rise sharply by 1992 while placing tracks with multiple imprints under various aliases. His first major breakthrough arrived that same year with the Quicksand 12" issued on Harthouse Records as Spicelab. The following year brought another key release, “Fragile,” which appeared on Superstition under the L.S.G. moniker. Whereas Spicelab productions leaned epic, shadowy, and subtly atmospheric, L.S.G. tracks favored dancefloor momentum and stronger melodic hooks, foreshadowing the late-’90s Hooj Choons trance sound. Lieb rarely used his real name early on, though the 1994 full-length Constellation stands as one such exception. Once established, he began issuing material more regularly under his given name, beginning with “Subraumstimulation” in 1999.
