Biography
Recognized early on as trance innovators, the Frankfurt-based pair Jam El Mar and Mark Spoon, born Markus Loeffel, registered a major breakthrough in 1992 with their pioneering remix of Age of Love’s self-titled single. Their first Jam & Spoon EP, Tales from a Danceographic Ocean, introduced the widely influential track “Stella,” after which the duo supplied remixes for Moby’s “Go,” Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Relax,” Deep Forest, and additional acts that dominated dance floors. The 1993 single “Right in the Night (Fall in Love with Music)” introduced American-born vocalist Plavka, who appeared on several subsequent recordings. Also that year the two-volume debut album Tripomatic Fairytales 2001 and 2002 appeared, steering the project from aggressive rhythms toward a more radio-friendly style. In 1996 they issued the happy hardcore and Euro-dance set Disco 2001 under the alias Tokyo Ghetto Pussy. Although Kaleidoscope in 1997 drew limited notice, a fresh remix of “Stella” became a global club success in 1999. Their trance alias Storm released Stormjunkie in 2000, and the final Jam & Spoon album, Tripomatic Fairytales 3003, followed in 2004. Loeffel died of a heart attack in his Berlin flat on January 11, 2006, aged 39. Numerous compilations and further remixes have surfaced since, and Jam El Mar continues working as a solo producer.
