Originating in Münster, the German techno-pop outfit Dune drew its name from David Lynch’s 1984 science-fiction feature. Its core members were DJ Oliver Froning, born in 1963, producer Jens Oettrich, and Bernd Burhoff (aka Plutone), born in 1969. Once “Hardcore Vibes” and a version of Rozalla’s hit “Are You Ready to Fly” had appeared, the three musicians joined forces with vocalist Verena von Strenge (aka Verena) to prepare their self-titled debut album, which contained the successful single “Can’t Stop Raving.” The follow-up Expedición arrived in 1996, accompanied soon afterward by a concert recording captured in Rastatt, Germany. Lasting recognition came with the 1997 release Forever, a sixteen-track collection laid down at London’s Abbey Road studios that revisited Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever,” Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” (popularized by Sinéad O’Connor in 1990), and Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds.” Vanessa Hõrster took over vocal duties from Verena that same year.
