Sven Väth ranks among Germany’s foremost advocates of trance and techno, owing to his recorded output, marathon-length DJ performances, numerous official mix compilations, and oversight of several imprints. He first rose to prominence as vocalist for the dance-pop act OFF, whose lineup later supplied members to Snap!, and reached national audiences in 1986 when the single “Electrica Salsa (Baba Baba)” peaked at number three on the German pop chart. After the group disbanded, Väth immersed himself in Frankfurt’s underground hard-trance community.

Recognition followed from his endurance sets, some stretching nearly twenty-four hours, and from co-founding Harthouse Records in 1992. Working with Ralf Hildenbeutel, he oversaw label releases credited to Barbarella, Astral Pilot, and Metal Masters. A licensing deal between Harthouse and its affiliates and Warner Bros. in the United States enabled the 1992 release of Väth’s debut solo album, Accident in Paradise, again featuring Hildenbeutel’s contributions. The record revealed his aim of uniting techno and trance with the narrative scope of progressive-rock concept albums; although it vanished quickly from American retail, Mixmag later named it among the finest dance albums ever assembled.

Europe received the follow-up The Harlequin, the Robot and the Ballet Dancer in 1994, yet its American edition surfaced more than a year afterward and disappeared even sooner. After completing a project with Stevie B-Zet as Astral Pilot, Väth withdrew for several years, cutting ties with Harthouse to concentrate on DJ work. Signing with Virgin, he delivered three full-length productions: Fusion in 1998, Contact in 2000, and Fire in 2002.

During the same span he inaugurated an annual mix series on the Cocoon label—named for the parties he had begun promoting the previous decade—beginning with The Sound of the First Season. Cocoon went on to issue a broad range of twelve-inch singles by Legowelt and Roman Flügel, as well as additional DJ mixes from Steve Bug and Ricardo Villalobos. Although new productions from Väth himself remained infrequent, he stayed occupied directing the label and maintaining a full schedule as a veteran performer. The compilation Sound of the 18th Season reached stores in late 2017.
