Binary Finary, consisting of Matt, Ricky Grant, Woody and Tony, generated enormous attention from both media outlets and audiences through their signature trance anthem “1998.” The single first appeared on Aquarius Records before EMI Records’ dedicated dance imprint Positiva Records picked it up, propelling the track to widespread commercial success. It came to define the euphoric, melody-driven trance sound that defined the late-nineties “Mitsubishi Revolution” sweeping European nightspots such as the UK’s Gatecrasher. Dance floors embraced the record for its forceful chord progressions, tension-building breakdown and sweeping climaxes, while numerous mix compilations featured the track and prominent DJs including Paul Van Dyk—who delivered a remix—Paul Oakenfold and Judge Jules championed it in their sets. In 1999 Positiva issued a two-disc re-release titled “1999” that showcased additional versions by Van Dyk, Matt Darey, Gouryella (DJ Tiësto and Ferry Corsten) and Kaycee; the package crossed over to mainstream listeners and peaked at number 11 on the UK charts. Throughout 1998 and 1999 the group delivered live performances at clubs and festivals including Glastonbury Festival, Cream’s Creamfields and various venues across Ibiza.
