Biography
Born around 1956 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Sabler took up guitar as a child. While enrolled first at Vanier College and later at Concordia University, where he concentrated on jazz studies, he drew notice for his playing on campus radio. Although rock ’n’ roll occupied him during adolescence, university years carried him through the blues toward jazz and fusion. His rapidly advancing technique led to appearances at prominent Montreal venues including the Esquire Show Bar and In Concert. He next pursued further training at the University of Miami, focusing on music with particular attention to guitar. Following his departure from university he performed in a trio aboard cruise ships. Music became a part-time pursuit until the late 1980s, when growing interest in smooth jazz created increasing opportunities for him. He maintained ties to Canada and, in 1989, wrote the soundtrack for the television documentary Lost Treasures Of The Titanic. North American tours followed, several of which found him opening for artists such as Richard Elliot, Diane Schuur and Spyro Gyra. Based in Florida, he continues to perform there with Citiheat. Among the guitarists whose approaches shaped his own were George Benson, Larry Carlton, Wes Montgomery and Lee Ritenour. His recordings have enjoyed extensive airplay on Canadian smooth jazz stations, and in 2005 he received nominations for Best Guitarist and Best Album at the inaugural Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards.
