The art-punk outfit Lice came together in Bristol during 2015 when guitarist Silas Dilkes placed an online call for members on Bristol University's social media platform. Alastair Shuttleworth came aboard as vocalist and Gareth Johnson as bassist, after which Bruce Bardsley took over on drums. Although the four musicians were still enrolled at university, they quickly turned their attention to writing original songs shaped by post-punk acts such as the Fall and the Birthday Party. In 2016 they issued the EP Nutmilk: The Basement Demos on Wintermute Tapes and soon supported the Fall and Fat White Family on tour. Their own raw garage approach aligns with that of Fat White Family while also echoing the abrasive punk style of Bristol contemporaries Idles, leading the group to sign with Joe Talbot's Balley Records. The label issued It All Worked Out Great, initially as a two-part EP that gathered the band's early recordings and later as one complete album.
