Biography
Lily & Madeleine craft dreamy, reflective indie folk reminiscent of First Aid Kit and Fleet Foxes, accented by a hint of Taylor Swift. The Indianapolis sisters Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz issued their self-titled debut album in 2013 while still in their teens. Their layered harmonies and gift for enduring melodies persisted even as subsequent releases, such as the 2016 New West Records album Keep It Together, adopted a broader and more seasoned approach.
The Jurkiewicz siblings first drew notice through a monochrome homemade clip for their initial composition, “In the Middle,” which quickly surpassed half a million streams. That refined songwriting attracted the attention of Asthmatic Kitty Records, where producer Paul Mahern and bassist-songwriter Kenny Childers of Gentleman Caller assisted in completing their debut EP, The Weight of the Globe, issued in early 2013. Mahern also oversaw the full-length version of the self-titled album that arrived later the same year; it peaked at number 14 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart and placed inside the top 50 among independent releases.
During 2014 the pair tracked their more ambitious second album, Fumes, which appeared before year’s end. Their third LP, Keep It Together, expanded the instrumental textures while preserving the clarity of their vocal lines; again produced by Mahern and released on New West Records in early 2016, it became their third consecutive entry in the top 20 of the Americana/Folk chart. Teaming with the Grammy-winning duo of Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian, known for their work with Kacey Musgraves, they delivered Canterbury Girls in early 2019.
