Lisa McHugh led the Irish country revival of the 2010s together with Nathan Carter and Derek Ryan. Long regarded as sentimental and old-fashioned, domestic Celtic country had catered chiefly to an older Scots-Irish public until these attractive young performers restored the style to mainstream chart success. Born in Glasgow to Irish parents and raised in the rural Carmunnock village outside the city, McHugh absorbed her family’s deep affection for country music from childhood and soon embraced the genre herself. Regular trips to Ireland during her early years strengthened that attachment, which she maintained through adolescence even though the music lacked contemporary appeal. An enthusiastic vocalist, she acquired guitar skills and took formal music classes at school.

After several years employed in her father’s construction firm, she risked a professional singing career and, at twenty-one, entered the Irish television contest Glór Tíre in 2009, advancing to its final round. The experience markedly increased her confidence, leading her the following year to relocate to her mother’s native Donegal, where she joined promoter Ray McLoughlin, assembled a band, and began live performances. Possessing a rich, melodious voice, wholesome appearance, and warm, approachable manner, McHugh quickly attained genuine stardom. Her debut album, Dreams Come to Life, appeared in 2012 and brought her the Female Singer of the Year award from the Irish World. That same year Gene Watson invited her to record vocals for his newest project, taking her to Nashville and securing a shared appearance at the Grand Ole Opry.

She later settled in Enniskillen, within convenient distance of both Belfast and Dublin, around the same period Nathan Carter arrived; the two close friends were briefly romantically linked. In 2014 she issued her second album, A Life That's Good, which featured the singles “Applejack” and “Hillbilly Girl,” and was granted her own series, On the Road with Lisa, thereby reaching a wider audience. Glór Tíre invited her back in 2015, this time as a mentor. Her third album, Wildfire, was released that year, followed by #Country in 2016.
