Biography
Upon finishing secondary school in Madison, Wisconsin, the four former classmates—Kai Kennedy on lead guitar, Jesse Laz on rhythm guitar, Aaron Collins on bass, and Sam Bair on drums—left the Midwest for Brooklyn. There the musicians, who had adopted the name Locksley, quickly shaped an energetic modern take on rock in the style of the British Invasion. Independent releases began with their 2004 album Safely from the City.
An opening slot on OK Go’s national tour broadened the group’s exposure, and 2006 brought further visibility when their single “Why Not Me” won an mtvU polling contest. After placing a song in the blockbuster film Cloverfield and supporting Hanson on the band’s 2007 tour, Locksley reissued their earlier album Don't Make Me Wait in 2008. That year MTV also adopted "Why Can't I Be You?" as the theme for its reality series of the same name and selected the band to headline the network’s cross-country “Choose or Lose” tour. Aaron Collins had since left the lineup, with Jesse’s younger brother Jordan Laz taking over on bass, and the revised group recorded 2010’s Be in Love.
