The Argentine ensemble los Fronterizos first appeared on stage in 1953 when they entered a competition held at Alberdi Theatre in Salta, where they quickly gained backing from the regional musician Eduardo Falú. The folk outfit joined the TK Records roster the following year and then spent 1955 traveling throughout the nation. Carlos Barbarán exited the lineup in 1956 and was succeeded by César Isella, after which the group embarked on its initial European tour. The quartet switched to Philips in 1958 and, four years later, cut Coronación del Folklore in tandem with Eduardo Falú and Ariel Ramírez before issuing the widely praised Misa Criolla in 1964. Yayo Quesada stepped in for César Isella upon the latter’s departure in 1969. Although los Fronterizos formally dissolved in 1977, the members reconvened on multiple occasions in subsequent years for live performances.
