Biography
Dornel served as both an organist and a composer, securing the position of church organist at Ste Madeleine-en-la-Cite in Paris ahead of Rameau. The "Mercure de France" contains several positive reviews of his motets, though none of those works remain extant today. Among his surviving pieces are various instrumental compositions such as violin sonatas, flute suites, trio sonatas, harpsichord pieces, and secular vocal music. In his sole theoretical treatise, Dornel denounces the application of key signatures exceeding three sharps. Reflecting his background as an organist, his compositions maintain a consistently polyphonic texture.
