A figure possibly trained under Marchand and perhaps carrying German ancestry—his name listed in full as Jean Adam Guillame Freinsburg on the Pieces de clavecin—Guilain secured lasting recognition through the organ collection Pieces d'orgue pour le Magnificat. . . . The set comprises four suites keyed to each of the Magnificat’s opening four tones. Every suite unfolds across seven movements, opening with a prelude, then moving through duo, trio, and dialogue before featuring solos and closing with a petit plein jeu. Qualitative, fully developed motifs distinguish these organ works, granting each independent voice its own expressive weight, whereas the harpsichord pieces display markedly less distinction.
