Biography
Formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 2001, the angular trio Love of Diagrams delivers a sharp, high-voltage sound that echoes the angular post-punk of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Pylon. Vocalist and bassist Antonia Sellbach, guitarist and vocalist Luke Horton, and drummer Monika Fikerle—who previously performed with the Bites, Sea Scouts, the Grimm, and Jihad Against America—constitute the lineup. The group quickly built recognition through its propulsive stage presence and relentless road schedule, sharing bills with Sonic Youth, Electrelane, the Rogers Sisters, Stereolab, and similarly inclined acts. After inking a deal with the Australian independent Unstable Ape, the band issued its first full-length effort, The Target Is You, in 2003. The 2005 EP We Got Communication followed, spotlighting the track “No Way Out,” which Passport later pressed as a U.K. 7-inch single and which also surfaced during the final season of The O.C. That same year the musicians made two visits to the United States, performing first at the South by Southwest festival and returning late in the year; both journeys included sessions with producer Bob Weston at Electrical Audio in Chicago. Matador Records signed the trio in 2006, at which point it issued its last release for Unstable Ape, the Love of Diagrams EP. Early in 2007 Matador put out an additional self-titled EP to herald the arrival of the second album, Mosaic, that spring.
