Born in Scotland, this modern Scottish singer made a striking vocal contribution to the lone album issued by Contraband in 1973. Once the group dissolved, Transatlantic introduced McKenna to audiences as a singer-songwriter. She went on to release several capable yet unremarkable albums, then devoted most of the 1980s to session work alongside pop acts including Rick Astley and Ultravox. McKenna resurfaced unexpectedly in 1988 on Virgin Records’ Venture subsidiary with the Celtic-tinged, new age project Nightfallers. Its follow-up, Mirage & Reality, revealed her Enya-like qualities and, though not matching the impact of the earlier release, featured a remarkable reading of the Gaelic ‘St. Columbia’s Hymn’.
