Until his true identity came to light in 2017, Malte Ebert performed behind the enigmatic Gulddreng persona, marked by dark sunglasses, and swiftly rose to prominence across Denmark by landing a dozen Top Ten singles in 2016 and 2017 before discarding the alias. His supple, soul-infused singing then sustained his chart momentum with the mid-2018 single “Rather Be,” now issued under his own name.

Malte Fynboe Manniche Ebert entered the world in Vejle, Denmark, in 1994. While still in his late teens he joined Frederik Meyer to form the electro-pop duo We Don’t Know, which delivered the EP Nothing But Sound in the summer of 2014. After signing with Universal, the label shaped the Gulddreng character for him. Beginning with the debut single “Model,” he amassed tens of millions of streams and scored three straight number-one hits—“Model,” “Se Mig Nu,” and “Hva Så.” Four further chart-toppers arrived in 2016: “Drikker for Lidt,” “Nemt,” “Ked af Det,” and the seasonal track “Guld Jul.” That same year he received the audience award at the Danish Music Awards. In 2017 he added the Top Five singles “Utro,” “Lyvesangen,” and “Ensom.” The project’s lone album, Farvel, surfaced in early 2018 and reached number four, after which Gulddreng played his final concert on February 2, 2018.

Ebert returned in June 2018 with his first release under his legal name. Fans embraced the shift, sending “Rather Be” to a Top Three position in Denmark. August brought the dance-pop follow-up “All the Time,” an attempt to widen his audience through English-language material.
