Born on December 16, 1981, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Emmanuel Rodriguez grew up in the Tamarindo neighborhood, a setting defined by drugs and violence. From childhood he showed both talent and drive to compose lyrics drawn directly from his surroundings and the difficulties of youth. In 1996, at age sixteen, Rodriguez met Jesus and accepted him as savior, a step that redirected the trajectory of both his life and his work. He began crafting tracks centered on his Christian faith, placing himself at odds with the dominant direction of the genre. Repeated opposition did not halt his progress; his catalog and standing continued to expand. His first solo album, Realidades, appeared in 2002 under the name Manny Montes. Songs such as “La Vida que Nace de Muerte” brought him public recognition and attention from industry figures. Those opportunities led to additional performances and recordings, including the 2004 collaboration United Kingdom, a project uniting multiple Christian rappers that proved highly successful. The album prompted a large outdoor concert in Puerto Rico titled United Kingdom: El Concierto, which generated strong-selling CD and DVD editions. Montes released his fourth album, Immortales, in 2006; it featured contributions from roughly thirty-five ministers and musicians joined in delivering a message of hope and truth. Although reggaeton remains largely unaccepted by the church, Montes keeps working, widening access and shifting attitudes.
