Biography
A Christian singer, songwriter, and minister, Alex Campos has collected a string of Latin Grammy, Premios ARPA, and GMA Dove awards while gaining widespread recognition across the Spanish-speaking Americas. As founder of the band Misión Vida he issued his first live long-player, Tiempo de la Cruz, in 1999. After extensive touring through Central and South America he delivered the studio debut Al Taller del Maestro three years later, which earned platinum certification. Since that release Campos has performed annually for audiences exceeding 400,000 people. The 2005 album Como un Niño attained multiplatinum status, and in 2010 he received a Vertical award for Album of the Year before claiming his initial Latin Grammy in 2011; Regreso a Ti repeated that distinction in 2013. Derroche de Amor arrived in 2015 carrying further accolades, followed by its live companion the next year. Soldados, a 2020 set of duets with fellow Christian artists including Redmi 2, Madiel, and Michael B. Stuart, preceded Renovado, which reimagined nine earlier hits through fresh arrangements and updated lyrics. The family-centered studio project Vida surfaced in 2023 and gave way to Esencia in 2024.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, Campos launched his musical path at fourteen by playing recorder in a church worship ensemble rather than singing. At seventeen he formed Misión Vida, still primarily functioning as a church worship group even as he began composing original material. The CanZion Group issued his debut studio album, Al Taller del Maestro, in 2003; Asociación Colombiana de Productores de Fonogramas certified it platinum, and the recording climbed the Latin, American Christian, and gospel charts, solidifying his standing. Four Premios ARPA nominations followed, with a win for Composer of the Year marking the first of numerous honors.
Subsequent releases Como un Niño in 2004 and El Sonido del Silencio in 2006 failed to match that commercial peak. Beginning in 2006 Campos collaborated on songs with cousin Joshua Flores, whose contributions introduced traditional Colombian folk elements into the lyrics. Cuidaré de Ti reached the Latin, Latin pop, and American Christian charts in 2008 and earned a 2009 Grammy nomination for Best Christian Album (Spanish Language). By then Campos had become a YouTube phenomenon whose live performance clips accumulated millions of views, expanding the reach of the concert album and video Te Puedo Sentir, itself nominated for a Grammy for Best Christian Album (Spanish Language) in 2010.
Returning to the studio that year, he unveiled Lenguaje de Amor in August; the project captured a Grammy in 2011, while Regreso a Ti secured another at the 2013 ceremony. That same year Hillsong: Global Project Español, featuring Campos, took Spanish Album of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards. The songwriting partnership with Flores ended in 2013, leaving Derroche de Amor as the first Campos album in a decade without his cousin; issued in spring 2015, it charted on both the Latin album and Latin pop lists. Momentos appeared in 2017, blending mariachi textures with reworked classics and new songs, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.
The all-acoustic Como en Casa followed in 2018, again revisiting earlier material through home-studio unplugged renditions. Soldados, released in 2020, assembled duets with Latin CCM performers such as Madiel, Indiomar, and Danay Suarez alongside three new solo originals. Renovado in 2021 returned to nine catalog tracks, which Campos rearranged with different instrumentation, rewrote in part, and re-recorded. Vida, a 2023 ten-song collection spanning bachata, pop, rock, and contemporary R&B while exploring marriage, fatherhood, and other facets of family life, preceded the 2024 single “Rumbo Pa La Iglesia,” included on the Latin Worship album Esencia.
