Manolo Caracol

Born Manuel Ortega Juarez, Manolo Caracol ranks among the most extraordinary voices ever to shape flamenco. His extensive discography and numerous screen roles established him as one of Spain’s foremost entertainers during the middle decades of the twentieth century. A singer of intense emotional force, he drew notice while still a child. Early on he earned the fond nickname Niño de Caracol and built a strong local following through performances at neighborhood celebrations. At thirteen he won first prize in Granada’s Lorca Cante Jondo contest. Although the Spanish Civil War barred him from public stages and fiestas, he kept appearing at private gatherings. His career reached its peak after he met and fell in love with the flamenco dancer and singer Lola Flores in 1943. Joining their gifts, the pair traveled the globe and starred together in several motion pictures. Their partnership unraveled when an offer arrived to work in American films; Flores pressed to accept while Caracol declined, and the couple parted. Their separation produced the first annulment of a canonical marriage in pro-Franco Spain. Later attempts to recreate that success, even alongside his daughter Luisa Ortega, never restored the momentum of his earlier years. In his final period Caracol concentrated on running his club, the Basket Makers, which he operated until his death in a February 1973 automobile accident.
