Originating from Northampton in the United Kingdom, sound sculptor James Chapman operates under the Maps banner, fusing indie electronic textures with atmospheric, sleepy rock drawn equally from Spiritualized and My Bloody Valentine as from Four Tet and Boards of Canada. As a member of the Mute Records roster, his 2007 debut received a Mercury Prize nomination and opened doors to a sequence of progressively shifting albums, among them 2013's Vicissitude and the expansive, highly collaborative 2019 release Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. Entering the following decade, Maps turned toward uptempo dance textures on 2023's Counter Melodies.

A trained classical violinist and percussionist during his formative period, Chapman later shifted focus toward atmospheric rock and electronic music. In 2005 he acquired a 16-track recorder and commenced tracking material influenced by Spacemen 3 and the Beloved. Early EPs including Start Something, issued on Last Space Recordings in 2006, prompted Chapman to join Mute. The label issued Maps' 2007 debut album We Can Create, co-produced by Valgeir Sigurosson (Björk) and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós). Shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, the album garnered broad critical praise and established the foundation for his more electronically driven successor, 2009's Turning the Mind, which examined mindfulness and the mind's responses to varied stimuli. Chapman refined his approach further on 2013's Vicissitude, which contained some of his most memorable and electronic-driven material to that point. The following year saw the arrival of the remix collection Realigned, assembling notable reworkings of Maps material with contributions from Andy Stott, M83, and the Field, among others.

During 2016 Chapman pursued a separate venture, teaming with Mute labelmate Polly Scattergood in the duo ondeadwaves. Returning to Maps, he pursued his most ambitious album to date, enlisting classical ensemble the Echo Collective alongside assorted vocalists and guest instrumentalists for 2019's Colours. Reflect. Time. Loss. Departing from the more cerebral and melancholic tone of earlier works, Chapman embraced a colorful, dance-oriented palette on Maps' fifth album, 2023's Counter Melodies.
