Biography
Marina Allen, a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter whose gentle assurance pairs with a clear, ringing vocal delivery, echoes the seasoned, folk-tinged compositional approach of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Laura Nyro. Candlepower, her debut full-length, appeared in 2021; the more exploratory Centrifics followed a year later, while the introspective Eight Pointed Star arrived in 2024 and favored earthier sonic palettes.
She joined Fire Records in late 2020 and completed her first song, “Oh, Louise,” that February. The seven-track Candlepower reached stores through the label that June, with Allen producing alongside Ben Schwab of Golden Daze and Ben Varian, both of whom also performed on the sessions.
Chris Cohen handled engineering and production for the 2022 follow-up Centrifics, whose wider range of reference points encompassed Meredith Monk and Joanna Newsom. Cohen likewise produced Eight Pointed Star, a grittier set whose title nods to a quilting motif and whose lyrics draw from history, anticipation, and folklore. In support of the June 2024 release, Allen played a handful of headline dates and toured with Real Estate and Ben Howard.
