Mark Atkins, a builder and performer on the didgeridoo, safeguards the musical, artistic, and narrative heritage of Australia's indigenous peoples in his shows. Although his main focus lies on individual performances, he plays a key role in both the Kooriwadjula Ensemble of Contemporary and Traditional Australian Musicians and Ankala, which he established alongside Aboriginal artist Janawirri Yiparrka. His stage appearances have also included collaborations with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Bridging two distinct heritages, Atkins has an Irish American father and a mother from the Yamijiti, a western Australian Aboriginal group. He has made his home in Eastern Australia since the late 1990s, having relocated there to escape the constraints of tribal traditions.
