Having spent his early years in Texas, country singer and songwriter Mark Nesler took up guitar while still young. Exposure to his father’s bluegrass collection also prompted him to learn banjo. After performing with local pickup groups through high school in the Beaumont vicinity, he moved on to a touring unit that supported the Wrangler Star Search. When that run ended, Nesler started the group 2 Pistols, but repeated road work yielded no label interest.

His breakthrough arrived in 1994, as Nashville executive Jerry Crutchfield placed him under contract as a songwriter with MCA Publishing. At the same time, fellow Texan and emerging country artist Tracy Byrd recruited Nesler for both his road band and songwriting sessions. Accepting the offer returned Nesler to the highway, yet he kept composing; in 1998 Tim McGraw carried “Just to See You Smile” to the top of the charts. Nesler’s own debut album, I’m Just That Way, reached stores that June. Later the same year he married contemporary country performer Jennifer Hanson. He went on supplying material to Trace Adkins and other Nashville acts. In 2002 Daryl Worley recorded his composition “I Miss My Friend.”
