Following the 1997 breakup of Hunters & Collectors, Mark Seymour launched his solo path with the 1998 release of his first album under his own name, King Without a Clue.

Having spent two decades in Hunters & Collectors, Seymour faced assumptions that his music would remain rooted in the guitar-driven pub rock style long associated with that group. Instead, King Without a Clue revealed another dimension, incorporating folk and country textures.

To realize the project he brought in his brother Nick Seymour, the ex-Crowded House bassist, along with Hunters guitarist Barry Palmer and drummer Peter Jones. The resulting record achieved modest commercial traction across Australia.

Several singles emerged, among them the finely crafted “Last Ditch Cabaret” and the evocative “The Ghost of Vainglory,” the latter widely expected to join the enduring Australian canon already established by Hunters & Collectors material.
