Matthew Logan Vasquez first gained recognition as co-founder and lead singer of Delta Spirit, the shape-shifting heartland indie rockers whose sound has always reflected an eclectic mix. His intense vocal style and introspective songwriting pull from an expansive range of sources, among them Gram Parsons, Kurt Cobain, Neil Young, and Iggy Pop. Working alone, he blends indie rock with electronic pop, R&B, and soulful Americana, touching on melancholy before ultimately embracing uplift, a balance most evident on the home-recorded yet lively second album Does What He Wants, which appeared in 2017.

Following the 2014 release of Delta Spirit’s fourth studio album, the widely praised Into the Wide, Vasquez relocated to Austin, Texas with his wife and infant son and started shaping material for his first solo project. That effort surfaced as the 2015 Austin EP, on which he performed every instrument across a fiery collection of outlaw psych rock tracks; a full-length debut, Solicitor Returns, was slated for early the next year. In January 2017 he unveiled “Same,” the propulsive lead single from Does What He Wants, which followed that April. The next year brought the EP Texas Murder Ballads, tracked at his Austin residence and positioned as an introduction to his third album. Light’n Up arrived in February 2019 via Dine Alone Records; the set was begun at the Austin house and finished after Vasquez settled in his new home in Oslo, Norway.
