Maurice Deebank held the roles of lead guitarist and primary songwriter in the British punk group Felt throughout the 1980s, yet he sustained an approach that merged punk’s raw propulsion with classical elegance once he performed alone. His two solo outings, Inner Thought Zone from 1984 and Red Heaven issued 11 years afterward, earned recognition as peak achievements in psychedelic music.

Deebank laid the groundwork for Felt during the early 1980s by starting rehearsal sessions with bassist Nick Gilbert. The subsequent entry of vocalist/guitarist Laurence (Hayward), who took over as bandleader, along with drummer Gary Ainge, locked the group’s earliest roster into place.
