Mermaidens

Mermaidens emerged from Wellington, New Zealand, crafting moody, angular indie rock shaped by post-punk, grunge, psychedelic rock, and the gentler strains of dream pop. Their association with Flying Nun Records began with the 2017 release Perfect Body, their second album overall.

Gussie Larkin on vocals and guitar, Lily West on vocals and bass, and Abe Hollingsworth on drums—friends since childhood—established the trio in 2013 after crossing paths at the Camp a Low Hum festival and resolving to perform there the next year. They fulfilled that intention and issued the EPs Bones and O, both appearing in 2014. The band handled its own release of the debut album Undergrowth in 2016, during which they supported Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, and Mac DeMarco on select dates.

Flying Nun Records subsequently signed Mermaidens, resulting in the September 2017 album Perfect Body. That November, the group was selected to open a New Zealand concert on Lorde’s Melodrama world tour. Maintaining their partnership with longtime producer James Goldsmith, they returned to the studio in 2018 and delivered Look Me in the Eye through Flying Nun in September 2019.
